In this print series, Volmar’s “Sissy” does a double take. The image as a multiple amplifies the central figure’s penetrating gaze. The choice of indigo, in one edition, echoes Carrie Mae Weems’ Colored People Grid. This double take gives pause to a glance, a moment of recognition freezing time itself.

Skye Volmar is a Philadelphia based, internationally known, visual artist. Volmar graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design, with both a Bachelor of Fine Arts and the painting department’s distinguished Florence Lief award. Volmar’s artistic practice has since received support (in the form of grants, fellowships, and residencies) from multiple sources including: the Kyoto Fund, the Center for Reconciliation, OxBow School of Art and Artist Residency, The Macedonia Institute, and Vermont Studio Center. In addition, multiple noteworthy publications (Artsy, Artnet, Art in America, Fukt Magazine, Harper’s Bazaar Arabia, Paper Magazine, The Vestal Review) have featured her work prominently.

Volmar’s practice explores her connection with Black and Haitian American (sub)urban girlhood, the city, and the natural world. She communicates the beautiful, ugly, and in-between of her experience as a spiritual practice, the product of which is an offering to the collective. She creates art-objects, often images, with specific attention to material (mixed media, such as: acrylic & oil paints, plastic barrettes, brown-paper bags, colored pencils, crayons, make-up, rhinestones…and so on), movement (actions, gestures, patterns, rhythms…and so forth), and craft (both domestic and ritual). Her work is an enticing shiny surface, cultivating space for self-reflection. The intended viewer looks and sees and feels seen. Her recent solo exhibitions include 'flower, child' with Deli Gallery (NY, NY) and 'I see how you look at me' with Richard Heller Gallery (LA, CA).
