Accompanying the exhibition dearmuthafuckindreams, opening this Saturday April 5th at the Hessel Museum of Art, is a zine printed and published with collaborator Leslie Diuguid of Brooklyn-based Du-Good Press.

This publication extends the intergenerational thrust of the exhibition, debuting two interviews that further excavate the living resonances between the black queer renaissance and today.

One interview is between myself and artist Wayson Jones, contextualizing and reminiscing on his role in the black queer art movement of the 1980s, particularly the musical dimension he added in his composition of live performances with poet Essex Hemphill (a selection of the performances presented in the exhibition).

And the other interview is between artists Jaguar Mary X and Char Jeré, drawing out a history of the black lesbian film tradition and the dialogue between their two films Frankie and Jocie (1994) and The Black Women’s Garden (2022) which are jointly presented in the upcoming exhibition.
